Christchurch: Mitchelli’s Cafe Rinato

We decided to spend the morning in Christchurch but instead of the CBD, my friend recommended that we take a short drive to Woolston and visit one of her favourite destinations in Christchurch. What used to be a historic tannery site, the family that owned the property decided to turn it into a Victorian Arcade and in 2013, The Tannery was born. A complex that house various eclectic boutiques that sellsitems such as genuine leather, second-hand clothes, naturopathic ointment and antiques.

Amongst the shops is Mitchelli’s Cafe Rinato, an Italian cafe that spans over two storeys. It was a busy Sunday and the gentleman that greeted us was clearly having a bad day, which could explain why we were hastily shooed to find our own table and menu. Not the best start to our day.

My dining companions and I ordered the following brunch items:

Nested Eggs – Two eggs nested amongst a potato, spring onion and smoky ham hash, baked and sprinkled with chilli flakes

Mitchelli’s Speciale – Chorizo, cannellini beans and tomato topped with a poached egg and drizzled with sage brown butter. Served with garlic yoghurt and crusty bread

Bacon Butty – Free range bacon, onion jam, tomato sauce with fried egg

We were pleased with our food, I especially enjoyed the Mitchell’s Speciale with the garlic yoghurt. Coffee on the other hand was substandard, two out of our four beverages was burnt and the lack of friendly service left a rather sour note.
