Located inside Orion Health in Grafton and a few minutes walk from Auckland Hospital, Welcome Eatery is one of those eateries that are only open from Monday to Friday. Perfect for nine-to-fivers, but unfortunately not ideal for people who are based out of the CBD. Lucky for me, I was working out of Grafton one morning and made it in time for lunch before their kitchen closes at 2PM.
The kitchen produces a well-rounded variety of dishes that focused on predominantly organic products. We ordered the mushroom risotto with red cabbage, hazelnut, slow cooked egg and parmesan, as well as the fish of the day which was Cajun spiced with potatoes, almonds and beans – both well executed and decently sized for a perfect lunch. I paired mine with a cold black brew coffee and he had a cold-pressed apple juice.
The vibe of the cafe is, as the name suggests, welcoming and relaxed. The gentleman that looked after us was friendly, helpful and made sure we were looked after. If you’re not looking for a sit down meal, there are plenty of other options in the cabinet, packed with freshly made salad and sandwiches. Perfect for those popping by for a quick-lunch.
Now if only they’re open during the weekend…
