Auckland: Eight Point Two

Eight Point Two has been a staple in the Birkenhead suburb and have been in Metro’s Top 50 Restaurant every year since 2010. Housed inside a beautifully restored villa, this suburban eatery can accommodate up to 70 guests.  It’s latest reinvention sees Chef Des Harris consulting for Eight Point Two as chef partner while remaining as Executive Chef at Clooney.

We came on a Friday night was a 8:15PM reservation to a full dining room and we took a cozy table by the window. This place must be popular with the locals! From their seasonal menu, we ordered two appetizers, two mains and a side to share.

Pork Croquettes | Smokey pork encased in a crispy shell served on top of a pickled mustard seed emulsion.

Duck Liver Parfait | Smooth velvety duck liver parfait with a toasted side of buttery brioche. The dollops of feijoa chutney was a great way to cut the rich liver.

Pan Seared Snapper | Fillet of flaky snapper with soft shell crab tempura, broccolini and thinly sliced radish.

Beef Short Rib | Braised beef short ribs with crispy kale, cauliflower and creamy mash

Fries | Crispy hand cut fries with truffled mayonnaise

I was very impressed with the taste and execution of all our savory dishes. The portion for the mains were smaller than expected, however. My favourite dish would have to be the duck liver parfait –  combination of brioche and duck liver, utterly delicious

We had ample room for dessert so we decided to have one each. The salted caramel was overly hyped up so although it was delicious, it was not as phenomenal as I had expected. The fig leave and plum parfait lacked texture but the pieces of sweet plum made up for it.

Salted Caramel Parfait | dark chocolate ganache and banana

Honey Custard | Fig leaves and plum

If you’re looking for a delicious meal at a restaurant where parking is effortless and service is attentive, look no further and make your way to Eight Point Two. We had a wonderful meal here and despite being the last to leave the restaurant, we never felt rushed to leave. I look forward to coming back in the near future!
