Auckland: Tatsumi

My boss raves about this fabulous Japanese restaurant on a regular basis, so when we decided to head out for lunch on a sunny Saturday, I wanted to see just how amazing it is. Since relocating from Christchurch after the Canterbury earthquake, destroying their original restaurant, Tatsumi now call the heart of New Market home.

We order a variety of different dishes from both their lunch special and dinner menu and were pleasantly surprised that we were served a trio of amuse bouche.

So, let me do a quick run down of our food. Sashimi – an assortment of different types of seafood including fresh oyster, lightly seared prawns and gorgeous slices of fat tuna. The presentation is stunning and you can taste the freshest of the ingredients.

Delux lunch Set – The best value for the day, we selected three tapas (tuna sashimi, prawn tempura and agedashi tofu) along with a small bowl of rice, miso and pickled vegetables. We throughly enjoyed the light crispy batter around the prawns.

Soft Shell Crab – best soft shell crab ever. Same with the prawns, the light batter perfectly encased the juicy crab. Drizzled with wasabi mayo and garnished with spring onion and salmon roe, perfection!

Shio-Koji Marinated Chicken Teriyaki – I’m usually not a big fan of teriyaki chicken, but this convinced me that it can be a phenomenal dish. The use of fermented rice in the marinade kept the chicken very tender and it was cooked just right, the chicken pieces were oozing with juices. The dish included a couple pieces of karaage chicken which has a delicate coating and it was well-flavoured.

I went with high expectations and these were all met. Attentive service, calm ambience and exceptional food, I can’t wait to take my parents here because I know they enjoy great Japanese food like me.
