Located within the CBD, we made our way to ChangGo early Sunday night for our Korean BBQ feast. I found out about this place after scrolling through my Instagram feed and I came across a picture of my friend’s recent dinner and their famous pork belly dish. We managed to get their last table but little did we know that the table was located at a spot where the air conditioning doesn’t travel to and that was the start of our sweaty night of Korean BBQ.
The Eight Flavour Pork Belly BBQ Set ($58.90) comes with eight strips of pork, each marinated in a different sauce (wine, original, ginseng, garlic, herb, curry, miso and red pepper), a large bowl of spicy kimchi stew, rice rolls and assorted sides of vegetables that included onion rings, bean spouts and garlic. To cool off, we ordered two bowls of their cold noodles which was a refreshing compliment to the meat. We really needed something cooling because as soon as the hot plate started to heat up, it was like dining in a sauna.
We underestimated the size of the pork when we ordered so we ended up adding a plate of the prime scotch fillet as well as slices of beef tongue. These were served with several complimentary sides that included kimchi, green onion salad and pickled vegetables.
Unlike most typical Korean BBQ in Auckland, the staff at ChangGo comes around to your table and cooks for you. There are pros and cons to this approach. The advantage to this is that the experienced staff makes sure that the meat is cooked perfectly and not left on the hot plate for too long. Having different staff cook for us at our table does disrupt our conversations but it makes for a great opportunity to small talk with the waiters. We did get a few comments about the amount of food we ate, which turned out to be a great deal. But overall, we had an excellent meal at ChangGo.
