My weekend away in Melbourne with three beloved friends involved eating and lots of it! The first thing on our agenda when we landed early Saturday morning was to leave our luggage at our apartment and head out for a much needed brunch.
Our first stop was The Grain Store on Flinders Lane. Despite being nestled away from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne CBD, the cafe was nearly full by the time we arrived early Saturday morning. We managed to get a seat on one of the large wooden communal tables and we mulled over on what to order. Their menu is rather impressive as they incorporate a large variety of nutritious and healthy ingredients, cooked with a rustic flare.
Wanting something savoury but healthy, I opted for the grilled asparagus with house smoked salmon. This was served with a poached egg, blood orange segments, greens, goats curd and crispy quinoa. I love a runny egg yolk and this perfectly poached egg added richness to the dish while the pieces of tart blood orange countered and added some acidity to the greens.
If you’re ever at The Grain Store, make sure you order a side of the crispy halloumi (not pictured) as it is the best preparation of halloumi I have ever tried. Deep fried to a point where the exterior is golden and crispy while the interior is slightly rubbery (but in a good way), this side was much loved around the table.
What a great way to start our trip. I was overwhelmed with all the dining options in Melbourne and I’m glad that we picked an amazing cafe to get us ready for all the food that is to come.
